Watching this year’s 20th anniversary of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, world-renowned marine biologist and shark researcher Samuel Gruber was shocked to see every myth about the shark’s violent nature come to life on screen. Pandering the lowest common denominator, the Discovery Channel’s coverage of the majestic shark has failed to educate the public on the shark’s true nature and fallen prey to the public’s need to paint the sleek species as blood-thirsty, brainless killers, he says.

Sam Price was among six activists who were detained by Chinese authorities on August 7 for his role in an action designed to raise awareness about the continuing plight of Tibet. He and fellow members of Students For A Free Tibet unfurled a flag on the Great Wall of China, which read: “One World, One Dream: Free Tibet,” and they were swiftly detained for less than two days before being swiftly deported. It’s now up to alleged serial killer Robert “Willie” Pickton’s defense team to plant the seed of doubt in juror’s minds. Pickton is standing trial for six counts of murder relating to sex trade workers missing from Vancouver’s downtown eastside. Trisha Baptie, a former sex trade worker, is covering the trial for Orato. The Palms in Las Vegas is one of the hottest party hotels for the twenty-something crowd. The pool is always swarming with sun-bronzed specimens, carefully stretched out on wicker couches and lawn chairs, lined up like cars in a parking lot. The corridors are usually bustling with muscles freshly pumped from the $20-a-pop gym, while Fergie, Akon and the Killers blare on the loudspeakers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
